Well this was a fun book! Heads up for those who are more private about bodies and "personal things": this book centres around a sex toy shop and is very sex positive. Cade is the black sheep of her family, in that they are all free spirits who use drugs freely and seek out a good time whereas she craves responsibility, runs her parents' gallery, and is great at accounting. To her surprise, after her Aunt Ruth dies, Cade is given her sex toy shop and house and instructed to run it with Ruth's friend and apprentice Selena, who seems to fit into Cade's family more than she does herself. The store is in a lot of debt and the women have a month to whip it into shape otherwise everything of Ruth's must be sold or repossessed to pay it off. Opposites attract and the women develop feelings for each other while bringing out the best in each other but assuming the other won't want them because of their baggage and worst insecurities.
I gave this 4 stars when I read it initially, but the characters stuck with me and there was something about it that made me want to return to the story. Now that I have, it's clear to me that the unabashed sex positivity in the story is a large part of what drew me in as someone who grew up in religious purity culture. I recognize myself in the character of Cade as she learns from Selena, the shop, and her aunt's memory. Both women had some preconceived notions about themselves and who they were, but being together helps them see themselves through the others' eyes. Loved it! Also, as someone who recently lamented the lack of normalized body hair in romances, I was pleased to be reminded that pubic hair was mentioned during the steamy scenes!
