kyatic 's review for:
Rise Up and Repeal: A poetic archive of the 8th amendment
by Sarah Brazil, Sarah Bernstein
It almost feels cliche at this point to describe a book as necessary or important, but this book is both of those things. It's devastating and beautiful and haunting and some of the poems in here physically hurt to read. I live in Wales and have always taken abortion access for granted; if I ever need it, it's an option available to me. Hearing the testimony of those who have had to fight for literally decades to get something I've always been allowed was troubling and - cringe - inspirational.
I am a dreadful person who dog-ears pages in books that speak to me. I think about half the pages in this book were dog-eared.
In ten years' time, this book will still stand as a historic record of those who fought to give people control over their lives and bodies, and although a part of me wishes it didn't need to exist - that people always had that measure of control - I'm so glad it does.
