Songs of Love and Death by Gardner Dozois, George R.R. Martin
4.0

I really liked this anthology. Often when I read short story collections there are a lot of stories I don't like, but I believe there were only three stories here I disliked, out of a total of 17.

The book features a mix of fantasy, science fiction and horror stories, all with the central theme of love. While there is definitely a lot of romance, there are also a number of stories which do not have happy endings or which are darker in tone.

There are some big names featured in the book, including Robin Hobb, Jim Butcher, Neil Gaiman and others. A few authors have written stories which tie into their existing novel series, while other stories are standalones. I'm not sure if I have a favourite, although I enjoyed the story by Melinda M. Snodgrass enough to look up her other works, which appears to include a series inspired by the short story (at least, the novels all came out years after the anthology).

I read the entire book in one day and had a really good time, I recommend it.
