Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

First off I love that the character's name is Gemma (because my oldest daughter's nickname is Gemma).
This is the story of Gemma who lives in India but desperately wants to move to London. On her birthday Gemma's whole life changes when her mother dies and she experiences seeing the future for the first time.

I think the overall story was an essential setup for the rest of the series and we got a lot of good foundation information. The characters were slightly annoying but also they are teenage girls who are at a boarding school to help prepare them to be ladies and wives.

I thought that the school setting was interesting and the mystery in this story definitely kept me reading. I think that Libba Bray's writing style is very readable. That is one thing that I love about Bray's novels is that when I sit down to read one they keep me pulled into the story.

I think my only real critique of this book is that the girls kept doing really reckless things and as a mom and 33-year-old woman I just kept getting very frustrated with their choices.

Overall though I really enjoyed this book and can not wait to continue with this series.
