A Long Way Down
by Nick Hornby
It must have been quite a challenge to write a funny book about four people who meet one New Year’s Eve when they’re about to commit suicide. A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby is one of the funniest and most poignant books I’ve read. Hornby’s unlikely quartet of losers are believable and a couple of them are even quite unlovable, yet they are each gradually affected and changed by Maureen’s quiet goodness. This isn’t a preachy book and isn’t for those who are easily offended by language, but ultimately is a heart-warming story about the necessity of friends to get us through life’s most challenging times.
