Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality: Gay People in Western Europe from the Beginning of the Christian Era to the Fourteenth Century by John Boswell

5.0

Foundational to the field and such an informative, entertaining read. Non-academics should be willing to be patient with footnotes and non-translated words, but I found the vast majority of it perfectly accessible. It's very much an introduction/summary, but that's what it set out to be. It's not perfect, but it was necessary in many ways--revolutionary first texts have to exist at all in order to be critiqued, analyzed, and improved upon! Regardless of one's opinion of his thoughts/analysis, the texts (especially poetry) he brings to the table are so valuable and deserve to be better known. I'm so grateful to be able to connect with queer people through history.
