Karen Identifies with Monsters. She would rather be a Monster and not part of the MOB (Mean, Ordinary and Boring). And you know what she makes a compelling case!

Monsters pretty much keep themselves to themselves, are not prejudiced (you are prey or you are not) and do not try and force the world and the people in it to abide by their rules. Also importantly the undead cannot die and leave you.

The Human MOB, on the other hand, have tried to exterminate their own kind for being prostitutes, Jews etc., their children will attack you for being different and of course, they can die.

I haven’t read many graphic novels so in fairness, I cannot really compare but the artwork in this is truly spectacular. I borrowed this book from the library but if I owned it I imagine I would flick through for the artwork on a regular basis.

The main plot of the story is centered around the mysterious death of an upstairs neighbour. The narrative ebbs and flows at a strange and staggering pace. There is time taken out from the direct plot to discuss such subjects as Karen’s views on certain classical paintings, geometry, current politics (US late 1960’s) etc. I can understand why some reviewers did not appreciate this but speaking for myself I was reading Victorian novels (including Jane Eyre) at the same time as this book. I will say that the Victorian novels, even truly loved ones have exactly the same “flaw” if we call it that. They often take time out to preach to you about God, to tutor you in unwise behaviour etc. Jane Eyre and My Favourite thing is monsters also share a common trait in that most of the plot is unrealistic and overly dramatic and requires more than usual effort to suspend disbelief. But then this is high drama and worth the effort for the ride. At least in my opinion :)

After finishing I ordered volume 2 from the Library (though is not published yet) and look forward to reading it soon. I am no 3 of a waiting list of 4 as I type. So if they order 3 copies? ?? Also, if anyone would like to buy me a copy of the book for Christmas or any other reason please do so :)

This is recommended to lovers of art, dark fiction and to those who have the patience to let a story emerge slowly.
