The Adventure of the Speckled Band
by Arthur Conan Doyle
One of the stories in the larger The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes volume, "The Speckled Band" features a locked-room mystery of sorts in which Sherlock and Watson must solve one murder and prevent another. Miss Stoner, a future heiress living with her abusive stepfather, comes to the duo and begs them to save her life, convinced that she will be killed under the same mysterious circumstances that her twin sister was a year previously.
This story was engaging and fun! I wasn't a huge fan of the resolution, as the obscurity of the murder weapon (?) really doesn't allow the reader any chance to figure out the mystery for herself. Still, I thought that the story nicely balanced the recounting of the evidence with Holmes & Watson taking action personally.
