Ashton Hall
by Lauren Belfer
Hannah Larson and her son Nicky move from their home in New York to Ashton Hall, an English manor where they will soon find themselves embroiled ina. centuries old mystery. Hannah’s son Nicky is emotionally challenged and has been evaluated for autism, adhd, oppositional defiant hyperacticity and neurodiversity... and no therapy has been working. Hannah has dropped out of her art history schooling and spends most of her time with her son but now she has a part time online job finding art images of manufactured goods. When a relative calls and ask for her to come to Ashton Hall Hannah can’t say no. This is a slow story and focuses on the themes of marriage, motherhood and history with a dash of mystery. It’s definitely an atmospheric read and has tons of detailed descriptions and historical references. I initially went into this thinking this would be a gothic mystery but it definitely headed in a different direction. This one demands you pay close attention and its a pretty hefty read. While this one wasn’t for me I would definitely recommend it for anyone interested in historical fiction and historians!
