When No One Is Watching
by Alyssa Cole
Make it a movie. First Alyssa Cole book.
So first I’ll start off by saying there was a lot of mixed reviews about this one. How it’s “not a thriller” and all that. Well, most of the people who said this were/are white! ...and I’m here to say it was a thriller! I believe those who said that didn’t take a moment to realize how hard it is growing up a POC especially black in this world. If you read this & couldn’t for a moment imagine how this was in fact a thriller, there’s much work to be done on your end. The number one reason for me was: there’s a lot of fear and paranoia AND accuracy in being helpless & having not even the people who are supposed to protect you care.
There were a lot of people that said the story picked up for them in the half/ending & I strongly disagree. The entire 50% really did it for me. It was filled with social commentary & gentrification. Yes there were a lot of secrets & half truths...but I feel like the anticipation built so much it made for a scarier story. The ending...even though we got answers felt like I was reading a whole new book. Partly superhero-ish
