This was an engaging, well told portal fantasy, with a lot of atmosphere. The lovely illustrations really added to the magical feel of the story.
I loved the two main settings, the Castle Mila and the Land of Forbidden Magic. I actually wish the book had spent even more time on worldbuilding, because what we did get of it was intriguing and atmospheric, with creative use of Slavic folklore.
As an adult reader, I did find the plot fairly predictable, however I'm always concious that I am not the target audience!
Overall I would recommend this book, and fully intend to check out other books by Sophie Anderson.
