An incredible book in every way. Clint Smith's weaving of complex and varied evidence with storytelling and memoir... and then situating of these in broader histories, mythologies, and ways of knowing is powerful and important. The measured writing and commitment to challenging (and yet holding) readers reminded me so much of Karla Cornejo Villavicencio's descriptions of her process and vision in The Undocumented Americans. There were moments throughout this book where I had to stop and reread, not because the ideas were too challenging, but because Smith's writing decision-making, choice of words and imagery, ways of holding the people/their voices are gifts to the reader.
