The Book of Margery Kempe
by Margery Kempe
When I first read this I hated it. After having to study it extensively for a research project, I have a begrudging respect and appreciation for it, and would most likely recommend it. As an early feminist text, and a recently discovered Medieval text, I really like the way that it can be read as Margery desperately trying to live her life and express her voice though the pages that she wasn't even able to write. I think that is the most powerful part of this story, that Margery is still so visible and loud despite not being the author of her own story (the story was transcribed by a male monk/priest due to Margery's illiteracy).
