So Distant From My Life

I read this one a week or so ago now, and it’s a slim novel that explores questions of migration (particularly loved a short section which examines the difference between migration, immigration and expatriation and how those words are applied to different people - i.e. white people vs people of colour) and the impact of western charities in African countries. It was packed with sharp little observations and humour (like the white French guy who couldn’t be racist because he married a Black African woman), but the sexual orientation storyline honestly left me a bit baffled. It’s hard to talk about it without spoiling the plot entirely, but basically the main character realises he has a chance to escape his fictional West African country if he marries an old widower. He goes through somewhat of a sexual identity crisis, but I was left in the dark in terms of resolution. It feels like he did have genuine feelings of attraction towards another man at one point, and he struggles obviously with internalised homophobia throughout, though mostly aimed at other gay men. But I couldn’t work out if he was having a genuine breakthrough or if he was just willing to go to any lengths to leave his country in the hopes of a better life 😅 Overall an interesting little novel from a Burkinabé author, but not as impactful as I’d hoped.
Graphic: Homophobia, Xenophobia
Moderate: Death, Violence
