Sabriel by Garth Nix
3.0

Sabriel was a pretty good book. I first heard about it when I was in middle school and decided it would be a fun book to listen to on my commute. That being said, this book is average. I didn’t hate it; I didn’t love it. It won’t be a book I remember in a few months. Sabriel is on a journey to find her father who had gone missing. He was the abhorsen, and she becomes the new abhorsen as she tries to find him. We follow Sabriel on her journey with a talking cat and eventually she meets a soldier named Touchstone. I thought the writing was fine. It was just average. There wasn’t any character development for any of the characters, but based on the writing I think that this book is aimed toward younger readers so that might be why. In YA novels that I usually read, I get pretty irritated at the narrator but that doesn’t happen in this book, Sabriel is a pretty good character to follow. She has a purpose in the novel which I found refreshing compared to other YA novels. It tries to lean toward epic fantasy, but it doesn't quite hit the mark for me.
