Serpent's Claim
by Marina Simcoe
This was recommended to me by the kindle app as like other books I had read. The book starts out following Amira a servant girl at a traveling menagerie run by a sociopathic woman who tours animals from foreign worlds. She has been raised in the menagerie and generally abused and beaten down by the madame who runs it. One day when cleaning she finds that one of the crates with an ‘animal’ in it actually contains a sentient being. Against her better judgement she starts talking to Kyllen, who it turns out is a Gorgon or something like that. Eventually she decides to free him and they escape back to his world which is where the second book picks up. The book was fine, this unfortunately fell into a stretch of kind of meh books. Overall I found Amira to be kind of winy and I kept waiting for her to get caught doing stupid shit. She gets a little bit more personality in the second book but still constantly being stepped on by everyone around her. The sex was sentimental and minimal which didn’t help with the personality issues. I did read both books but I didn’t seek out any other books from the interconnected universe.
