Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan
1.0

DNF at page 15 and 16.

This was book 3 in my LGBTQ TBR challenge series on TikTok, and this is a fucking fail part 2. 3 books in, and only a 33% success rate. What am I doing wrong??? :,)

Anyway, the transphobia is a no.

"I didn't know when Infinite Darlene and I first became friends. Perhaps it was back when she was still Daryl Heisenberg, but that's not very likely; few of us can remember what Daryl Heisenberg was like, since Infinite Darlene consumed him so completely."

This is just a small little snippet of the reason I DNF'ed. Yes, this was written in 2003. Doesn't excuse the action of the author writing this. The rest of it is just transphobia from the narrator and I don't need that, so this is a fucking DNF.

Yea, this character is supposed to be a drag queen and a quarterback, but was it needed? Not really. No thanks. This is a hard pass for me.

Let me explain why I didn't like pages 15/16. To me, this screams like the author is trying to make fun of Drag Queens. I haven't researched the author at all, so I don't know if that has changed. But in this book, it felt like those 2 pages were making fun of Drag Queens, but also an undertone of transphobia. It's hard to explain, but the comment about the name could have been worded differently so that didn't make it seem like she was trans and the MC was dead naming her. Because it took me 3 times to read that passage to understand, "oh so she is a drag queen?"

Plus, the narrator and all other characters were so FLAT in 16 pages that I didn't give a fuck about anyone. So, this is a DNF for sure and not something y'all should go pick up. Save your energy and read actual good LGBTQ books, thanks!!!!!!
