This first book in the Daughter of Shadow series sets the stage of our world — Calla as the FMC lives in a small human town that has not yet been overrun by the Ebon elves dark magic. The remaining Lumen elves have mostly kept to themselves while the humans are left to try and fight off Lyra, the Queen of the Ebon. Calla has recently turned 21 and will be testing her magical abilities at the town’s upcoming festival. Several of the King’s men have ventured into Calla’s town recruiting magical people to help fight off Lyra. Rohan, a human lightbringer warrior with the ability to fight off the dark magic of the Ebon; Galen, a Lumen high elf that has allied with the humans; and Leander, a human descendant of the Royal line, are immediately drawn to Calla and her small dragonkin. After things go terribly wrong during the festival, Calla finds herself on quite the adventure with these men. What she can’t quite yet determine… are they trying to protect her? Or are they trying to protect others from her?

There’s definitely some insta-lust to something more going on here. The feelings develop quickly and they seem to put Calla on a bit of a pedestal. A lot happens but I don’t think the character relationships are that well developed.
