Wither by Lauren DeStefano
3.0

Dystopian novels are the “it” thing to read and write these days. Wither is another book in this fast growing genre. Unlike many other dystopian novels this books is not action packed. There are a few actions scenes in the beginning, but the rest moves at a slow pace. That’s not saying it’s not good, it’s just slow. Rhine is one of three girls who were kidnapped and survived. She is taken to the house of a rich doctor and forced to marry his son Linden. The reason for these marriages is that the population is infected with a disease that kills girls at age 20 and boys at age 25. In order to find a cure the doctor needs children to experiment on. He is not ready for his son to lose his life. The story revolves around Rhine and the other 2 sister wives. They are trapped day in and day out on this compound forced into an unwanted marriage. This story has a sinister undertone, but you never get to the sinister events, its all just hearsay. When I asked the rest of the book club “do you plan to read #2?” we all had the same response. Maybe, if I have time and nothing else to read. The idea is great, but doesn’t really go anywhere. Its bad when you can honestly say I loved the cover more then the book.
