The Map of Salt and Stars by Zeyn Joukhadar
5.0

This was a beautiful, heartbreaking story. The writing was so exemplar that I really wanted to take my time with it, savoring each chapter.

Nour is the youngest of 3 girls. Her father just died and they had to leave him behind in the only home she knew in New York in order to return to Syria in 2011 at the beginning of the war. They're not back long when their neighborhood is shelled and they have to abandon their home & most of their belongings in search of medical attention and a safe haven. The book alternates between the legend of Rawiya, a long tale oft repeated to Nour by her father. Rawiya, like Nour, is a strong, adventurous young girl in search of the way to map home. The paths of both girls follow a route West out of the Middle East and along Africa's Mediterranean coast all the way to Ceuta, a piece of Spain tucked into the tip of Morocco.
