Dragon Ball Super, Vol. 1: Warriors from Universe 6!
by Akira Toriyama
Wow, this was a nice surprise. I've heard mixed things about Super but I really dug this.
So what's happening the the world of dragon ball after buu is defeated? Oh yeah, Goku is trying to make enough money so Chi-Chi doesn't try to kick his butt. The first half of this book actually covers battle of the gods storyline from the movie. It speeds it up a bit, only hitting major notes, cutting out some big moments, and giving us a quick glance of the world it's trying to set up. The 2nd half os the start of the new tournament saga which has Goku and friends vs 5 other warriors for the fate of their universe.
Good: The art is pretty solid and this is by a new guy, so that's nice. The story is simple yet charming, and hearkens back closer to the Dragon Ball days of humor which is a huge plus. I haven't reviewed DBZ manga on here yet, but I grew up on it both in manga and anime, and it takes itself far too serious sometimes. So I like the lighter approach here. Some great comedic moments mixed in with some cool fights and setting up a bigger universe is all a plus for me.
Bad: The covering of the gods movie is kind of meh. It's not horribly done but it does rush it and I'm glad I saw the movie before reading this. Not to mention they just skip out on the freeza movie all together haha.
Overall, a 4 out of 5. I really enjoyed this and wanna pick up the next few volumes. I don't have much time these days to sit and watch a 90+ episode anime so nice to just sit back and read a really fun manga volume in 20 minutes.
