The Woman in Me
by Britney Spears
challenging
dark
informative
inspiring
fast-paced
Reading this felt like being transported back to those deliciously gossipy books about these pretty rich girls living a life I cannot comprehend. It was fun and exciting! I pulled up the old performances she mentioned throughout, and it was nostalgic rewatching those iconic moments while reading her words. I did roll my eyes a bit at the "I'm an empath" section. That phrase is just so firmly embedded into white women spirituality that it will always put me on guard. But it's a brief passage, and then we hit the conservatorship years and things got really dark.
This was a quick and immersive read, with short chapters blurring into a stream-of-consciousness style of writing that felt fitting. Britney's been through a lot and I'm glad she's free and able to figure out who she is and what she wants to do now.
