I expected this to be a great, 5 star read but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. This novel follows an old woman who loves animals and hates the hunters that kill them. She is obsessed with astrology and tends to ramble often. Her neighbors are being murdered and she is often thrown in the mix one way or the other. While some of the writing was fascinating, the main character’s ramblings were a bit repetitive imho. Additionally, the ending left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. I had hoped the book would take a fabulist/ magic realism turn and make a forest spirit, wild animal, or similar power the one committing the murders. This isn’t the case. Unfortunately, the ending is mundane and more psychological than anything else. This book has one of those murder mystery endings that involves withholding information from the reader on purpose rather than giving the reader a chance to solve things themselves. While some of the writing and atmosphere was good, this book wasn’t for me.
