sorkatani 's review for:
Dark Adventure Radio Theatre: The Rats in the Walls
by The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society, H.P. Lovecraft
This was a great production with brilliant voice acting and I would really like to be able to give it a 5 star review but the fact that they chose not to change the cat's name seriously affected my ability to enjoy it as much as I otherwise would have.
The cat is named "N*man" and most people change this to "my cat", "the cat", the black cat", or "Black Tom" but HPLHS chose to use the cat's extremely racist and offensive name instead.
I love Lovecraft's works and I'm usually a purist but the man was a massive racist and when it comes to racial slurs there really is no reason to maintain that level of accuracy to the original text. I heard the n-word spoken more times by the narrator than I have heard in 37 years of life (despite growing up around some pretty racist people).
I really wish the HPLHS had been more progressive, or just less racist, in their choices.
