Between Life & Death by Jaclyn Kot
3.5

This book sits in a really interesting place for me, hence me marking it average.

The one thing that stood out is that it was VERY heavy handed on messaging. If you have a hard time finding symbolism or reading between the lines, this book is for you cause it spells it ALLLLLLL out.

Next commentary I have is the relationships between the main characters. First- I’m not sure why we were supposed to see these people as best friends. I noticed that, especially in the beginning, we were just told that they were “like family” or a “new best friend” but we were never really shown it. Which gave me no investment in the relationships.

Now the romance- in the beginning I was put off by it, but I’m glad I gave it a chance because it did all tie together in the end. And I think that it’s important to note that the end is actually what boosted this book to an average rating for me.

Once you suspend your disbelief and stop questioning why we are friends with certain people, the plot propels forward, and brings a huge air of intrigue with it, which it really what kept me engaged. Yes I was able to predict it halfway through, but I also think that that was the point.

My takeaway is that it seems like the author has a great vision, and the ability to execute it is there, however there is a lot of struggle with actually writing the lead up.

Regardless, the book was enjoyable! I currently plan to keep on with the series, so we shall see where it goes from there!
