Range of Ghosts
by Elizabeth Bear
I was recommended this book at a bookstore I always go to. I love fantasy books so this book sounded right up my alley and I was told that it was a good book. It had promise, wizards, ghosts, adventures. But the story completely lacked character development. None of the characters had personalities. We had Temur a wounded hero who is also grandson to the great kahn. Ex Princess turned wizard Samarkar, who I did like as a character because wizards are awesome. Honestly out of this whole book she's the only character that stood out to me. The only reason I didn't quit reading it was because I hoped it would get better.
Also there was a lot of sexualizing and objectifying women. Other than Samakar, all the women in this book were just there for Temur to have sex with.
I thought the ending was cool, but I pretty much guessed how it was going to end. With this book I wasn't completely absorbed. I thought her writing was pretty at the beginning but then towards the end she wrote things that completely took me out of the story. This happened constantly. I really think that this book could have used another round of edits and that would have really helped the book. The ending felt like it was just slapped together, there was no tension or suspense it was just thrown in there and then it ended.
I wouldn't recommend at all.
