Sister, Maiden, Monster by Lucy A. Snyder
5.0

I quite enjoyed this book and the story that it is weaving. It is definitely intense though, but since I enjoy a good gorey body horror story this was perfect for me.

I wanted to give a list of trigger warnings first, because this book definitely needs it.
Major trigger warnings (aka this will occur throughout the book): Pandemic, Gore, Body Horror, Medical Trauma, Non-Consensual Surgeries, sexual content. There's also one (unsuccessful) suicide attempt, pregnancy related body horror, cancer as well as a really flippant and insensitive remark about Jeffrey Dahmer's victims by one of the POV characters. Sexual assault is mentioned, but does not play a real role in the story, but the body horror related to pregnancy might be uncomfortable for some people in that regard as well.

As the summary says we follow three women through a global pandemic. Shortly after her boyfriend proposed to her, Erin starts feeling really sick and has to go to the hospital. Her illness will change her life forever. Her story line was really interesting to me and I think it makes a great introduction to this world. She goes from a woman who is trying desperately to hold onto normalcy to someone who is shunned from society and finally someone who finds love with another "freak" like herself. Savannah's descent into madness is quite a bit faster than Erin's and she really revels in the violent aspects of the story (she quite literally gets off on it) and I think her part is where the story really starts to spiral into something a lot weirder than your average zombie rage virus, which is how it started out with Erin. Since I like sci-fi weirdness, I really enjoyed it and I have to say I enjoyed the story more once we got into the seriously weird territory. Last we meet Mareva, who has had unexplained growths on her body forever, but with this apocalypse they become something a lot more scary. As the virus keeps evolving and changing, so does her body and the story draws to its apocalyptic end. If you want to enjoy ALL of this book, you will have to lean into the surreal horror aspects, especially at this point, but as the story escalates more and more with each perspective I think it works quite well.

If you like women committing crimes, body horror, gore, eldritch masters, a brutal mix of horror and sci fi AND you can stomach another book about a global pandemic, I think you'll like this book :) Also there's bisexual women in this book & that's always a bonus (Happy pride!)
