The Push by Ashley Audrain
4.0

I stumbled upon The Push accidentally and decided that it might be a fascinating read post reading the blurb. I'm unsure if everyone will enjoy it because of various reasons, one of them being the portrayal of motherhood in a rather unique manner contrary to how rewarding it usually is said to be and also due to certain horrifying incidents. Nevertheless, The Push is an intense psychological thriller that messes with your head. The plot is fairly predictable but the narration takes the prize. Considering how this is Audrain's debut novel, I'm amazed by how her mind works. If you're someone who enjoys a good dose of thriller, enjoys the overall feel of the book rather than focusing on the predictability, this one's definitely for you.

The book captures four generations of women, Etta, Cecilia, Blythe and Violet over the years. Although mainly narrated by Blythe in second person, we will learn about Etta and Cecilia through flashbacks. Blythe addresses the story to her husband referring him as 'You'. Motherhood hasn't been easy in her family and when she fails to connect with her own daughter, Violet, Blythe panics. To top it off, Violent isn't a normal child but has a dark streak. As she tries oscillating between doubts and fear, she discovers Violet's true nature. As a mother, Blythe suffers immense loss and this book hits hard in certain places. Written in a raw and unapologetic manner, The Push is a highly invigorating read.

If you're going in with a mindset that the plot offers you twists now and then, you'll eventually feel disappointed. This novel is to be enjoyed for its characters and drama. I recommend it.

Rating : 4.4/5.
