One Plus One
by Jojo Moyes
That book took me longer than I expected it would.
Don't get me wrong - it's a big book and I'm not the fastest of readers, but I enjoyed my last Jojo Moyes novel so much I kind of expected to fly through this one. (Maybe that's why - I started out with too many expectations).
Moyes is a fantastic British novelist. There is something in the way that she writes that makes her narration utterly British - which, for me, makes the story incredibly relatable and easily understandable. Immersing myself in this book felt akin to having a cup of tea or maybe discussing the weather. Her writing style is comforting and very familiar.
However, I felt disappointed at the plot of this novel. I'm not entirely sure why - I can't quite put my finger on what aspect it was that felt like... it had the potential to be a lot better. But the point is, for me, there was something missing from this story.
A few times in this book I caught myself feeling slightly bored, wishing I could just fastforward a bit until it became interesting again. But these moments weren't too often.
To review: If you are looking for a comfortable, easy read with some unlikely romance involving relatable characters, look no further. I suppose you could call this a British Road Trip novel.
If you're looking for a book which is deep and meaningful and unpredictable and wise, this one isn't for you, sorry!
