Blankets by Craig Thompson

Well it's hard to critique a book written about the authors life experiences. I will say that I appreciated the honesty the author had. I also thought the drawings were well done. I liked the metaphors he used and the details he included. So my review below is not really in regards to the illustrations or writing style.

The reason I gave it two stars is basically that I just didn't agree with a lot of what he said. He got a lot of things right in reference to the church but he kinda misses the point. People don't go to church because they have it all together, they go because they need Jesus. So it's a 100% guarantee that you will find 'hypocrites' or people who DON'T represent who Jesus is. And it makes me sad that he had the leaders in his church and in his home that told him the lies they told him, but people aren't Christians to follow other Christians. We follow Jesus and everything he stands for, if you use a middle man, you're not going to be satisfied, just like Craig Thompson wasn't.

He liked the idea of God existing but he didn't like the idea that the Bible was re-translated and misinterpreted numerous times by flawless humans- that the Bible was no longer God's truths and God's words. Which is completely incorrect. That's basically the conclusion of the book which I feel doesn't make a whole lot of sense. If you really believe in a great and powerful God and Creator, couldn't he powerful enough and love us enough, and be holy enough, to want to and be able to maintain the inerrancy of Scripture? It doesn't seem like Craig did a lot of searching to come to the conclusion he did. I think he gave up a little too easy. Again, I have no idea what all he went through and I can't judge him from reading this book. But I just can't give a book more than 2 stars that blatantly goes against all the truth I believe in.

I hope he keeps searching and rediscovers the God of the Bible. And if reading this books spurs others to explore who Christ truly is, then by all means read this book. But Craig Thompson is not someone you want to get your theology from. So for whatever that's worth- that's why I gave it 2 stars.
