Beautiful Country
by Qian Julie Wang
challenging
reflective
medium-paced
Beautiful Country was the first memoir I’ve read from an immigrants perspective, and i’m glad I picked it up. I’ll be honest and say I wasn’t expecting how heavy it would be. I say that as a white woman who hasn’t experienced anything close to what Qian and her family has. Whether it was hard for me to read the family’s story of struggle or not, it was raw and extremely well written story . In the end I found Beautiful country to be an eye opening and important book for anyone to read, especially those who have been lucky enough not to know the immigrant (especially undocumented ) struggle to simply feed their family and adjust to a new country. Please read this book.
