Green Lantern, Volume 3: The End by Ardian Syaf, Doug Mahnke, Szymon Kudranski, Geoff Johns
3.0

Not a bad ending, just a little baffling what Johns chooses to focus on in his last story. Introducing a new characters like Simon and Volthoom is a risky move given the limited page real estate to present the characters in a satisfactory way AND write the series finale. Because of that the book often feels like it’s in a rush to make us like Simon, giving as scene of him escaping a water boarding by racist government agents and fending off a Justice League that’s laughably bad at deescalating conflict. Volthoom also feels like the wrong antagonist for the series finale. His powers are cool, creating living constructs instead of the hard light the Lantern Corps use, but considering all the terrible things the Guardians have done and their creation of The Third Army (nice Reich reference Johns), it really should be the Guardians the GLC fights at the end of the series instead of Volthoom. If you’ve been reading Johns’ Green Lantern up to this point, there’s definitely stuff to enjoy, but it’s just not as effective an ending as it could have been. Recommended to fans, but newcomers should stay away.
