the ending here just took me by surprise, wow
Plot summary: It starts with a friendship. Joey is just a horse and, more importantly, he is Albert's horse. The strong bond built between them sets the foundation for the rest of the novel, and the boy's love for his horse is so innocent, it's completely believable that these two will keep looking for each other even when separated by war. They grow up apart, but will they ever be reconciled?
What do I think?: A petite book that has left a great impression on me. The beginning is very poised and eases you beautifully into the era and the setting. I expected Joey's point of view to come off as childish, but it was perfect, completely acting on emotions. Personally I thought the middle part was a bit slow, but when Joey entered "no man's land" I was blown away. If you want a reason to pick this book up, chapter 16 is it. Absolutely brilliant
Golden moment(s): Chapter 16
“cause when there's life there's still hope”
