Scarlet by Marissa Meyer
5.0

Well this has fast become one of my favorite series of all time.

Scarlet is interesting in terms of pacing. We're essentially split into two narratives that have very little overlap at first. Cinder's story, a continuation of the last books cliffhanger finale, starts off with all of the momentum as Scarlet's is slowing building up. Around the middle their pacing switches with Scarlet's being more intense and then the last third of the book you may as well throw your hands in the air because you are on a rollercoaster and you're about to do the big drop. Very intense and well done.

You know the trope of the guy who has external scars as a representation of emotional pain, who is all ~grr~ around anyone but the Love Interest? That trope is my comfort food. It's my mashed potato soup ok. So needless to say I loved the character of Wolf. Scarlet is also a great addition. I like that she is less self-doubting than Cinder but still fierce and sarcastic. Me gusta. Missed Kai in this book, though he was present in the narrative and I am grateful his struggles weren't forgotten (Kai is still my favorite, sorry Wolf)And though this book does play the gender roles straight (the subversion in Cinder was my lifeblood) I still loved the fact that a male character and a female character interact and develope a close friendship without it being coded as romantic at all. (Cinder and Thorne brotp)

Summation?
