Native Talk: A Collection of Bahamian Poetry
by Teri M. Bethel
lighthearted
reflective
fast-paced
Native Talk was a short and sweet book of Bahamian poetry that is written in native talk (ahaha). I enjoyed the setups of the poems, they were told in a story-like manner relating to casual ongoings in Bahamian life. Bethel had poems in here ranging from going to church to having a bad housekeeper. I adore the use of Bahamian dialect in literature and I love to read it. The author did have a preface in here that rubbed me the wrong way. It read "while it's fun to speak and read dialect, its extremely advantageous to read, speak and understand Standard English for effective communication." While I agree with the sentiment to some extent (I think code-switching can be an important thing for going out into the big bad world), I feel that it adds to the erasure of identity; that somehow you are 'less than' or your culture is 'less than' because they don't communicate "properly" (whatever that means).
