emmalouisepip 's review for:
An American Marriage
by Tayari Jones
fast-paced
This started off strong but the second half just dropped.
Soon as Roy got out of prison things changed.
The first half I felt for Roy. Being wrongfully convinced of Rape. Seeing the letters sent between Roy and Celestial. Watching their relationship crumble. But his behaviour once he left I stopped having so much sympathy for him.
I disliked the emotional abuse in this. The way Roy thinks he is entitled to sex with his estranged wife. How he berates her and even says he could rape her if he wanted. Those things are disgusting.
No one should be wrongfully convicted but that doesn't give you a pass to treat people like this.
Roy was never held accountable for this behaviour. It was never addressed.
The writing was easy to get through. The story itself was the issue for me. I get the point but Roy's behaviour ruined it for me.
