The structure was exciting and the whole history of heartbreak concept came together for me in the end. It was real in a way that didn’t necessarily feel good. All of the sex scenes had a negative air to them. I think it was possible to interweave some feel good romantic moments in here but I didn’t get any. No surprise that Bryan Washington and Brandon Taylor had reviews on the book jacket because I got a similar off-put feeling from each of their books. I’m not typically someone that needs my characters to be likable but I was missing that here for sure. I surprisingly did like how she portrayed the early days of COVID at the end of the book. Maybe because it’s two years later now, but she really captured what it was like in the spring and summer of 2020. She effectively used the pandemic to inform her character’s experiences and showed how it affected their relationships.
