This installment of Lucy Barton takes place the from March 2020 through spring 2021. While some sentences and moments resonated with me about the feelings of dread, fear, isolation and the anxiety/frustration it brought mostly I was frustrated and annoyed at the character of Lucy for being so dense and naive. Several themes and statements were rehashed (affairs, William’s and hers; childhood poverty, fraught relationships with her daughters) and the character seemed a bit tone deaf to the BLM and the fact she and William fled to Maine from NYC. Upon my writing out about this, that IS the character - Lucy is pretty self-absorbed at this point in her life, can’t wrap her head around a pandemic, social uprisings, the fact that her daughters do not see the world the same way she does, and only sort of able to see how her siblings lives are so different from hers. It just did not sit well with me as a reader and really frustrated me as well. I kept reading for the nuggets of beautiful writing, but I think I am done with Lucy Barton’s story.
