Fan Service
by Rosie Danan
I would like to thank the publisher, Netgalley, and the author for the ARC of this book. I read an advanced copy of this book, so the final edition of the book might be slightly different. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always.
I’ve been getting back into paranormal romance a bit lately. A few years back I think I’d just had too much of it, but I’m starting to appreciate it a bit more again. All these new releases have been helping, though not all have been winners.
Fan Service is an interesting one for me because while I did have fun and generally enjoyed this, it wasn’t a standout favorite. I think just a few things were missing, or some things I wish would have been developed or explored further. In the end, I think this book ended up being more about the fandom side of the story than the paranormal side. I do think it did tackle fandom well, both the feeling of being deep in fandom and the obsession that comes with it and how that feeling matures as you grow older too. It explored how there continues to be this connection with the fandoms you were in growing up, even if you’re no longer as into that media anymore.
The beginning of this romance was pretty slow, and it took a while for the tension to start building. While this did mean it took me longer to get into the book, I do think it was essential for the romance and relationship developing between Alex and Devin. There was also just a lot of groundwork that needed to be done for both the werewolf plot and for trust to begin building between the two MCs, and the slow beginning helped the entire plot feel more real and believable.
Unfortunately, I think the ending was a little fast for me and I don’t think the core issues that Alex and Devin had (both as individuals and as a couple) were properly resolved before giving them their happy ending. The solutions, while they had been pretty obvious to me from the beginning, felt like they were suddenly reached by the end, without the character development fully getting to that point yet. It meant my frustration from the third-act breakup didn’t have enough time to disappear before we suddenly saw them happy together at the end.
Overall, though, I did still enjoy Fan Service and I plan to give this author’s other books a try soon!
