Sal and Gabi Break the Universe

This book was so fun and so funny. I can not wait until the next installment.
Sal is a kid who wants to be a magician. He and his family have recently moved to Flordia where he get to go to a school specifically for artistic people. I really want to go to this middle school. With rock wall, textile, and theater classes, this middle school sounds like a dream. Not everyone always likes the new kid and Sal uses his magic to open doors and make friends. More importantly he likes to entertain people.
Sal is a special kid, not just for his magic tricks, but also because he is diabetic. I think this book does a great job of showing how it affects him, but not making it a handicap. The other reason he is special, he can see the rips in the omniverse and even take things from one universe into his. However, this can get him in trouble, especially when he brings his mother over from a different universe. His mother passed away years ago, and he still misses her, and sometimes he uses his special abilities to visit with his mom in another world, sometimes to disastrous effects.
Gabi is no slouch either. She has to be the smartest person in school. She is student body president, has the highest GPA, and editor of the school newspaper. But her world is not all cheery. Her newborn brother Iggy is in the NICU. In fact that is part of why her and Sal become such fast friends. That, plus, Gabi realizes she two can see rips in the fabric of the universe.
There is nothing not to love about this book. Normally Rick Riordan Presents books have a bit of mythology to them. I am not sure if the burjo’s are supposed to represent santeria or other myths, of if the Omniverse part of cuban myth. It doesn’t really matter. The author has left his Cuban representations all over these pages and it was marvelous to swim around in them. He makes sure to tell the reader what some of them mean, but he does not always translate the spanish. I like that. I’m even a non-spanish speaker, but I still like it.
I also love seeing the multiverse theory in something besides comic books. I don’t need more spidermen, but I do need more Sal and Gabi. Book 2 needs to get here quicker.
