As my first read of 2021, this book gave me a lot of hope and insight. I'm a young queer woman, and despite knowing the progress in legislation that has occurred in my lifetime I admit that I didn't have very extensive knowledge of the political process behind them. This has changed as I've grown and worked to be a better advocate, but I find myself constantly learning more about the advocacy work that occurred when I was younger and less aware. Sarah McBride's book taught me so much and showed me both how far we've come and how much further we must go.
Her stories about Andy were particularly moving. Andy's story so closely mirrored my grandfather's that I had to step away on several occasions. What really resonated with me was Andy's ongoing legacy. He has made a lasting and permanent imprint on the world, and his work continues to shape our country.
This book was written at the beginning of Tr*mp's presidency. Reading it at the end gives a new perspective, and in many ways reinvigorates my hope for what January 20th will be the start of. Knowing that Sarah McBride herself is now a state senator further feeds that hope. This book is a wonderful read as we begin the next era of our fight for equality.
