The New Avengers, Volume 1: Breakout by Brian Michael Bendis
4.0

Ah the Avengers book that got me into the Avengers back in High School.

Avengers is pretty big now. Everyone loves them. The movie changed the marvel universe and pretty much ALL superhero movies. However, back in the day, Avengers weren't a huge name. New Avengers by Bendis decided to change that. Let's get some big names in this group right? It worked for Justice League. They added Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman in the 90's. Bendis took Spider-man, Wolverine, and Cap and had them all team up. Instant Success!

This storyline begins with a huge breakout. Forty Six villains escape but not before a massive fight breaks out that has our heroes Spider-man, Luke Cage, Daredevil, Cap and more fighting for their lives. The second half is going after the person responsible for the break out. In doing so we're introduced to Wolverine!

Good: It's neck-break pace, quips out the ass, and big brawls is all Bendis signature style after House of M. So it works here because all the characters feel like themselves but together, and you got to love seeing Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Spider-man all talking shit together. Also the art is great, a mix of moody atmosphere yet uplifting moments.

Bad: The 2nd half isn't nearly as engaging as the first half. While it's good introduction to Wolverine for the team it's hardly as exciting as the breakout.

Overall this is a lot of fun. Like Justice League volume 1 for New 52 this is movie style fun all over it. Big, exciting, funny, and kickass, this is sometimes what you want in superhero books. While it's not deep or epic as Avengers by Hickman I'd argue this is a much better point to start Avengers comics. It's easier to get in to and you'll really come to like character who weren't big at the time like Spider-man and Luke Cage. A 3.5 out of 5.
