Mexican Gothic
by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
What did I just read? I mean that in a good way.
This was a very creepy, very atmospheric novel. Very awesone and character driven.
I knew I'd be getting a creepy house. I didn't expect to get so many creepy characters who are also very odd. The patriarch Howard is a nasty man they gonna drive very dark secrets. He actually disgusted me the whole time.
Noemà is a very strong, self assured woman who heads to High Place at the request of her cousin-who seems not herself in the letter she sends for help.
From the not talking at dinner, to the moans heard throughout the house, to the small and leery servants... There is enough creep factor to keep me captivated. The writing was meant to be a slow burn to keep that crazy atmosphere at the front of your mind.
TW: incest (talked about, not seen) miscarriages, mass death, suicide
