The Last by Hanna Jameson

3.0

To be honest, I read this book only because of the "locked-room" mystery but I ended up being more interested in reading about the characters and how they plan to survive with each other.

This book is being told through the diary of the narrator, Jon, who was there for a conference. Through his written account, we get to know the characters and how the plot unfolded. This is a relatively slow-moving book which I quite enjoy for this type of setting. It's not a book with non-stop action. It's more of a character study as Jon gets to know the hotel occupants in hopes to find the murderer.

So, while I did enjoy the setting a lot and I am going to find other books like this, The Last wasn't as thrilling as I was hoping it would be. As some point in the book, I thought it would go darker and then it didn't. There were many interesting sub-plots that I would love to read more about but it didn't go anywhere. Jon got on my nerves the more I read on and there weren't any other characters that I was rooting for either. I would have loved read this book in the perspective of a couple of the main characters.

That aside, this book really made me think about what I would have done if I'm in all the situations and THAT scared me.

I don't love this book but I do like it. Maybe a sequel to complete the subplots would be amazing.
