Octopuses are one of my all time favourite animals so I had been eager to read this for a while. Unfortunately it was a huge disappointment. The author obviously loves these creatures, but that is basically all that is talked about in the whole book. She just continually talks about how beautiful they are how she wonders how and why they do things. But it doesn't go much beyond that. I didn't really feel like I learned anything. The first chapter had more "octopus facts" than in the entirety of the rest of the book.
I also found it incredibly difficult to hear about how hard it is to keep octopuses in aquariums because they are constantly trying to escape. What a horrid existence! I get that they are "ambassadors" for their species to teach others about them, but at what cost? Octavia was sick and dying after giving birth to infertile eggs and Kali was trapped in a too small barrel, but the staff didn't want to move them around for fear of escape and because Octavia's eggs were good exhibit fodder. All this book did was make me never want to visit an aquarium again.
