We Were Liars
by E. Lockhart
After a tragic accident two years ago, Cadence Sinclair returns to the place where it all happened to see if she can remember what truly occurred that day. Her friends, The Liars, slowly help her piece together the mystery.
This book is one of those books that people will either love or hate. They will either find it super deep and meaningful, or shallow and frustrating. The writing style also will divide readers. Some may love the constant sentence fragments, others will not.
I was unfortunately the latter on these.
Right off the bat the writing style threw me off. While I knew the sentences were like that for a reason, it still irked me.
For example
the writing will suddenly
look
like this.
And then return to normal.
In the end it all makes sense, but it’s a struggle to get there.
Also, I didn’t like the character interactions in this book. The dialogue almost felt robotic at times and it really pulled me out of this book. Again, this is something that is explained by the twist at the end, but by then it’s too late.
I will say the plot twist did shock me, and it made everything about this book click into place. I was happy to look back and see all the bread crumbs placed throughout the book, hinting at the twist. The twist actually bumped up my rating a whole star.
The book itself is not bad, and again I can see why people love it. I loved the plot twist and just wished I loved the whole book like I did the twist.
