Sabrina
by Nick Drnaso
OK I mean this is not the kind of thing I'd usually pick up for myself, but it was the first Graphic Novel to be longlisted for the Man Booker prize, and I like to have Opinions about things, so...
my opinion is: okay I guess??
Just...very bleak and the art is lumpy and weird and looks like airline safety brochures. It must be intentional but I didn't like looking at it. I think this is probably just meant to be unpleasant to mirror how unpleasant LIFE in this MODREN ERA is. FINE, mission accomplished, but...eh.
like it's successful at conveying this flat detached affect but I just don't really like it.
Also it's so defined by the absence of women--the titular murdered Sabrina, the wife and daughter who actively do not want their ex-husband/father to spend more time with them, the grieving sister who doesn't understand the grieving process of her dead sister's boyfriend...eh...I was most connected to the story whenever we did get to hear these women speak, particularly Sabrina and her sister.
