Benediction
by Kent Haruf
A 2013 staff fiction favorite recommended by Connie, Jo and Ellen J.
Connie's review: Back to the town of Holt, Colorado, setting of PLAINSONG. Dad Lewis, owner of the town hardware store, is dying. His wife and daughter are there but his estranged gay son is not. But Haruf always shows how your everyday neighbors, friends and co-workers can make up your family. The writing is sparse but details of everyday life are beautifully described. The people are real as can be.
