The Spell Caster
by Tamsin Hawthorn
This is a really great series debut! It offers a fresh take on familiar tropes, strong character development, and an intriguing plot that promises more exciting adventures to come. The book wastes absolutely no time diving straight into the story, the world-building and the characters’ back stories. From the outset, Layla’s struggles of feeling like a failure are so relatable and set the scene for the journey she embarks on and the twists along the way. The concept of angels as antagonists adds a unique twist, and the lore is rich without it feeling dense or boring. The slow burn romance added a nice touch of tension, banter and levity and while I’m usually not taken by a childhood friends to lovers trope this one had me giggling and kicking my feet. I can’t articulate exactly why, but this book gave me some witchy Fourth Wing vibes at times and it had me hooked!
