Go the Distance by Jen Calonita

This read felt very young adult to me. Although I understand that this is the genre, I think that there is a range within this category. In my opinion, this book falls on the younger end of the spectrum rather than the older. It seems like it would have been more enjoyable if I had read it as a child, around the same time that the movie was released.

Hercules has saved Meg and the two have been transported to Mount Olympus. However, when Hercules expresses his desire to give up his immortality for a life with Meg, Zeus intervenes. Hera, on the other hand, wants to see her son happy and makes Meg an offer: complete a quest in 10 days and achieve the status of a god. Can Meg complete her challenge and figure out if an immortal life is what she wants?

This is the first book in the Disney Twisted Tales series that I have read. I did not realize that the books would stick so closely to the movies, down to descriptions of character clothes. This made it easy to predict and anticipate the characters’ behavior because they acted just like their movie counterparts.
The book creatively reworked traditional Greek mythology characters to fit the Disney mold. I am a fan of the traditional Greek myths. However, since several new mythology characters were introduced in this book, I had to forget their actual mythological origins. Their stories were entirely changed or significantly altered to fit the young adult narrative.

This book is best suited for a younger audience, in my opinion. Meg’s behavior resembles that of a girl in a middle school or high school relationship, which as an adult reader, I found annoying. Meg’s childish outbursts and refusal to acknowledge her limitations made me dislike her character. The book’s message is simple and clear: trust yourself, but it’s okay to let others in and not be so closed off. Additionally, it teaches that one should learn from their mistakes, and love is about give and take.
